Sandra Kitt, Gotta Read That! AuthorSandra Kitt is the author of more than thirty novels, including The Color of Love, Significant Others, and Close Encounters, as well as numerous short stories. Her work has been nominated for the NAACP Image Award and has appeared on the Essence and Blackboard bestseller lists. She is the recipient of the Romantic Times Lifetime Achievement Award and the Zora Neale Hurston Literary Award. A native New Yorker, Kitt previously worked as a graphic designer creating cards for UNICEF, illustrating books for Isaac Asimov, and exhibiting her own work, which is included in the collection of the Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles. She formerly served as the managing director of the Richard S. Perkin Collection in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. 

Sandra was the first black writer to ever publish with Harlequin.  She launched the successful Arabesque line from Kensington, later purchased by Harlequin. Sandra has received a WaldenBooks Award, and is the recipient of a Life-Time Achievement Award in Contemporary Fiction from Romantic Times, and the New York Chapter of RWA.  Romance Writers of America presented Sandra with its 2002 Service Award and she is the recipient of the Zora Neale Hurston Literary Award. At its 2014 New Orleans Book Lovers Convention Romantic Times further honored Sandra with a Pioneer Award for her many ‘first’ contributions to women’s fiction.

A native of New York City, Sandra holds a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Fine Arts from the City University of New York, and has studied and lived in Mexico.  A one time graphic designer and free-lance illustrator she has exhibited across the U.S. and is in several corporate collections, as well as the Museum of African American Art in L.A.  She has designed cards for UNICEF, and illustrated two books for the late science writer, Dr. Isaac Asimov.  She formerly served as the managing director of the Richard S. Sandra Kitt’s first mainstream novel THE COLOR OF LOVE was released from Signet Books to critical acclaim from Library Journal, and USA TODAY.  THE COLOR OF LOVE has also been optioned by HBO and LIFETIME.  Amazon.com has named SIGNIFICANT OTHERS among the Top 25 Romances for the 20th Century, and CLOSE ENCOUNTERSas one of the Top Ten Contemporaries.  GIRLFRIENDS, an anthology from HarperCollins, was nominated for the prestigious NAACP Image Award for Fiction. Sandra has published 40 novels, novellas and short stories.

In 1996 Sandra wrote the last show script for the Hayden Planetarium, that was narrated by Walter Cronkite.   A frequent quest speaker Sandra has lectured at NYU, Penn State, Sarah Lawrence, and Columbia University, and was an Adjunct for continuing education courses in publishing and fiction writing.  She has appeared on TODAY NBC, Black Entertainment Television, and Good Morning, America.

Signed with Open Road Media in 2013 a number of Sandra’s backlist titles, including the acclaimed THE COLOR OF LOVE, have been reissued as ebooks and POD.
